It is always a joy for us who love animals so much to give this kind of news and that is that even Prada, finally, is going fur free! Starting with the next women’s spring/summer 2020 collection, the Italian luxury brand will present totally fur-free collections, extending it to the second line Miu Miu.
Prada’s decision comes after a very big campaign that organizations like our LAV together with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) in collaboration with the Fur Free Alliance launched last year, expressly asking the House to renounce the use of natural fur in its collections.
Many of us participated in signing the petition and Prada finally listened to us.
In its ethical choice Prada joins Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace, the Michael Kors group, Armani, all luxury brands that under pressure from animal welfare organizations but also to the citizen and consumer’s request, have chosen to be fur-free.
The consequence of these ethical choices from the fashion industry is thus to have an increasingly heavy impact on the number of fur farms still active, in Italy and in the rest of the world. As we have already mentioned in several posts, there are many countries that have banned them or that will close them in a few years, such as the last 17 still active in Flanders that will have to close their doors by 2023. Norway, once the world’s largest producer of fox fur, has also voted to outlaw the fur farming since 2024.
Italy is missing, where about twenty mink farms continue to be active, causing the death of at least 200,000 animals a year (about 550 every single day). So, for eco-à-porter, the best news will be to announce that our country will finally have passed a law to ban permanently these fatal prisons.
